I love Tokyo. Its probably one of my most favourite cities in the world. Below is a list of great stuff to do beyond what you find in tourist guides:
Kisuke(2-6-1 Marunouchi, Chiyoda, Tokyo). The thought of beef tongue wouldn’t normally inspire me to eat, but after visiting this little place under Tokyo station, I’ve changed my mind. You can have the tongue grilled in different ways (say with salt or soy) and it’s not as chewy as you’d imagine. Great for a quick and different lunch.
I’m often in NY and make an effort to find interesting and different places to hang out in or experience. Below are 7 worth checking out:
Sleep No More(The McKittrick Hotel, 530 West 27th Street, NY 10001). Mind-blowing theatrical experience. You take a lift to a 1920s speakeasy bar, where you can have a drink and later return to. You are called out in groups to enter the multi-floored venue wearing a mask. The feel is one of a haunted house and you suddenly see actors/dancers performing. The plot is loosely based on Macbeth. You follow different actors. Truly immersive and perhaps the most original play I’ve ever attended.
I travel a lot and so often compare prices of the same items to see which country is the cheapest. This is especially the case with expensive small devices like I-Phones, but I’m never quite sure whether I have got the best deal.
With school holidays upon us, August nearing and hints of the sun, it’s time to think of what to read on holiday. I’ve read a ton of books this year, and here’s 9 that I’d recommend for a summer holiday:
Dataclysm: Who We Are (When We Think No One’s Looking) by Christian Rudde. The writer has a treasure trove of data from his dating website, OKCupid. He uses it to draw out what we’re really like, especially looking at the gap between what we say and what we do. One observation from the book I have to share: a 20-yr old woman tends to find 23-yr old men look the best to them, a 30-yr woman finds 30-yr men look best, a 40-yr old woman finds 40-yr old men look best and a 50-yr old woman finds most 46-yr old men look best So women find men their own age look the best. How about men? Well, a 20-yr old man tends to find 20-yr old women look best to him, a 30-yr old man finds…20-yr old women look best, a 40-yr man finds…um…21-yr old women look best and a 50-yr man finds…yes, you guessed it…22-yr old women look best. A fun, revealing and surprisingly deep book.
